WIRDS at the Vancouver Art/Book Fair today and tomorrow!
Not only will He/She is Dead: LET'S COLOUR! be featured at the Project Space table at this year's Vancouver Art/Book Fair, but my newest edition WIRDS will be sitting proudly at the Emily Carr University table. Keep your eyes peeled for this lovely new self-publication.
Following Wirds & Totties (2011) and Wirds & Whisky (2012), this new accordion edition, WIRDS is a collection of printed ephemera, imagery from Super-8 home movies and the favorite Scots words, phrases, and McNeil-isms collected from previous Wirds &... self-publications. From the two departure documents in which my grandparents were listed for their trans-Atlantic journey, to the mailed letters and photographs, these personal communicative objects paired with an imported yet everyday language tell a public story of immigration, altering cultural identity and diaspora. All editions (only 17 of them!) include a grey felt, hemp string and genuine leather tie-string envelope. Thank you to Ewan and Rod McNeil, Alison Hamilton, Alyson McLellan, Ian Fisher, Brian and Doreen (Dodie) Davidson for their contributions of wirds and family history.
